RSVPs are due by noon on the Monday prior to each meeting as online registration automatically closes at that time. First Ladies of the United States of America and Their Cookies

The First Ladies of the United States are all fascinating and each is unique. In previous HFCW programs, we have glimpsed the lives of Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Mary Lincoln, Dolly Madison, Elizabeth “Bess” Truman, Eleanor Roosevelt, Claudia “Lady Bird” Johnson, and Jacqueline Kennedy.
Rosalynn Carter, a Departure from Tradition and a Great Lady
We will now learn much about the life of our 39th First Lady, Eleanor Rosalynn Smith Carter. Her adventure in life is a definitely different from many other First Ladies, especially the early ones.
Where Everyone Knows Your Name
Rosalynn’s upbringing in the Lutheran, Baptist, and Methodist Churches shaped her life in the tiny town of Plains, Georgia. Family duties were important after the death of her father. We’ll also learn about her social life and courtship with her friend’s brother, Jimmy Carter. This includes interesting tidbits on Jimmy’s Navy career and the Carter Peanut Farm.
Back to the Future and the Peanut Brigade Goes National
Next we examine Jimmy and Rosalynn as soul mates and tell how she helped him win the Presidential election. Their system is a change from the typical campaign ritual, but absolutely necessary.

Now that President James Earl Carter and First Lady Rosalynn have moved into the White House, you’ll discover that she was a visible participant who championed causes of her own.
An Added Treat
Then enjoy a tasting of Rosalynn’s Pecan Squares, which were often served instead of the traditional pecan pie and Amy’s peanut butter cookies.

Carolyn Tucker Myers: Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, her family moved to a suburb of Detroit, Michigan where her father gained employment with General Motors. After five years of snow and ice, he moved the family south. Texas was chosen because Carolyn’s mother had a brother in Dallas and they had friends in Houston. In 1951 Carolyn’s father opened a hardware store in Pasadena where both her parents worked.
Carolyn graduated from Pasadena High School in 1955 and the University of Texas, Austin, in 1959 and married shortly thereafter. Her husband was in the Air Force and after spending two years stationed in Morocco, they returned to Coleman in central West Texas where she taught elementary school for six years. In 1977, she moved back to Pasadena with her only child, a son, and joined the family business. After the death of her parents and 60 years after its founding, Tucker Hardware was closed in 2011 and thus, ended a chapter in the family’s history. Carolyn’s extreme interest in presidential libraries began when she and her mother attended the hardware market in Atlanta, Georgia. Staying an extra day to sightsee, they toured the library of President James E. “Jimmy” Carter. Now Carolyn proudly possesses the collection of presidential plates, which her mother started on their trip. The other libraries she visited are: John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush. Each is different and intriguing. Carolyn is a past member and officer of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority and of Soroptimist International of Pasadena, a service organization. |
