SUMMARY:Lafayette's Nations Guest Tour
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DETAILS\n \n \n \n \n \n You will discover what is happening on the amazing tour recreating Lafayette’s “Guest of the Nation” Tour. This program describes the original 1824-25 celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the American Revolution. Lafayette triumphantly returned to bid the country he loved\, “Farewell.” At the time\, he was 67 and the last surviving major general of the American Revolution. Both Congress and President James Monroe invited Lafayette hoping his visit might reignite patriotic fervor in a politically divided America. From August 15\, 1824 to September 9\, 1825\, Lafayette journeyed more than 6\,000 miles by carriage\, stagecoach\, canal barge\, and steamboat\, traveling to all of the then existing 24 states as well as “Washington City.” Everywhere he went\, Lafayette was met with adoration and accolades as an American hero. \nThis program mentions a few of the different locations that Lafayette visited with its primary focus on New Orleans. There is an audience participation section where we will get to select short stories related to Lafayette’s tour. \nOur Speaker Denise Bennett is serving as Co-Chair of the American Friends of Lafayette’s Bicentennial planning committee for New Orleans which will occur on April 9-13\, 2025. She has been involved in planning every aspect of the five- day long commemoration. \n \n \n \n \n \n ABOUT THE SPEAKER\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Denise Bennett enjoys doing historical first-person interpretations. She invests months of research into every component of the historical person she portrays. Currently\, Denise takes on eight persona’s\, one for the each of the four centuries of American history. She had the honor of performing Adrienne de Lafayette at the NSDAR Continental Congress and at the Michigan State DAR Conference. \nDenise Bennet is a second and third generation American\, who despite her especially recent immigrants\, can trace her lineage in America back to the American Revolution and to the third ship that arrived in Plymouth\, Massachusetts in 1623. \nAfter extensive research for each of their complex applications\, she has qualified for her membership in ten lineage societies. She actually had one of the most international applications. In her first three generations she had proof documents which required translations from German\, Spanish\, and old Persian. \nDenise currently serves as the President of the Daughters of the War of 1812 chapter\, President of the New England Women Colony\, and Second Vice Regent for the Lady Washington chapter\, NSDAR. \nShe is deeply involved in of the Louisiana Bicentennial Committee of the American Friends of Lafayette. Denise is co-chair of the commemoration of General Lafayette’s Farewell tour which took place in 1824-1825. She is working on every aspect of the five-day New Orleans and Baton Rouge celebration in April 2025.

SUMMARY:A Transfomative Life: From Medicine to Sculptor
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM \nFrom missionary through medicine to multimedia artist\, learn how Carrie transformed herself. Overcoming obstacles early in life and during her education\, she persevered and became a physician’s assistant. To maintain her contact with the medical field while raising her children she worked from home as a medical transcriptionist. All the while her interest in art expanded. She took classes and taught herself many techniques. Today Carrie continues to expand her skills\, use different materials\, and explore new ways to express her artistic vision. You will view some examples of her work. \nSPEAKER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nCarrie Olsen is a multi-media artist but primarily a sculptor. Working in ceramic\, metal\, cement\, wood\, and found materials\, as well as 2D materials. She has taken classes in the US and France. Olsen also studied forensic facial reconstruction. She explains\, “It really is an extension of the way I create portraits\, but the skull is already there for you. So half the work is already done.” \nHer medical training provided a knowledge of anatomy that lends itself to figurative work. These pieces can be found in collections in the US\, Middle East\, and Japan. This work includes portraits of Sir Walter Lindal of Lindal Cedar Homes\, Joe Bob Briggs of television notoriety\, and Kaoru Iwamoto\, the renowned Japanese Go master\, among others. Olsen often uses a technique of her own creation that fuses molten aluminum to clay figures\, an unpredictable process\, yielding unique texture and form. \nTo see more of Olsen’s work visit CkOlsenSculptor.com.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:When Was the Last Time You Updated Your Will? Or Should You?
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM \nBoard-certified in Estate Planning and Probate\, a long-time Houston attorney will answer your questions. Should you update your will? In many cases the answer is yes\, says Houston probate and estate-planning attorney Sally Andrews. “Life changes\,” says Sally\, “and you will want your will to accurately reflect your wishes.” The birth or adoption of a child or grandchild is an example. Others include a marriage or remarriage\, or a change in assets or estates. \nSPEAKER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nSally Andrews has been Board-Certified in Estate Planning and Probate since 1992\, and has been recertified every five years (as recently as 2023) by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. \nSally is a member of all Texas and Houston attorney organizations dealing with Wills\, Probate\, Guardianship. She also focuses on the tax and litigation related to those organizations. She has been board-certified by the Texas State Bar in Estate and Probate since 1992\, and has recertified every five years\, most recently in 2022. \nThe UT School of Public Health hired her from Duke University on a three-year project. Next\, she attended UT Law School in Austin\, and later worked in firms in Houston. Sally second -chaired the first foreign corrupt practices lawsuit. She tried to leave the law practice because of the hours and stress. That did not work out so she moved from litigation into estate and probate and that solved the problem. This gave her the opportunity to tap her background and her master’s degree in psychology from the University of North Carolina. \nShe has one son who has three children\, and one of those is the first grandchild. None of Sally’s family went into law. However\, she did write her son and daughter-in-law’s Will\, and the most important (under recent law) Durable Power of Attorney\, plus a combination document for all medical decisions.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Cruising Through Tight Spaces
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM \nThe Creation of the Panama Canal 1870-1914 \nTake a trip through the 40 years it took to conceive of and build the Panama Canal. Most countries wanted this highway of water to be built in Central America\, but Panama was not the first choice. To oversee the project even the United States was not the first choice. \nThis program will reveal the immense challenges faced in the jungle during the building stage. These trials came with considerable human sacrifice. \nYou will be amazed at the story of the engineering phenomenon we call the Panama Canal. You will also learn the ins and outs of taking a full trip cruising through the entire 51 miles of the canal from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. Also you’ll have an inside look as you view photos taken from the cruise ship balcony. \nSPEAKER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nCarolyn Tucker Myers is originally from Memphis\, Tennessee. Her family moved to a suburb of Detroit\, Michigan where her father worked with General Motors. After five years of snow and ice\, he moved the family to Houston. In 1951\, her parents opened a hardware store in Pasadena. \nCarolyn graduated from Pasadena High School in 1955 and the University of Texas\, Austin\, in 1959\, and married shortly thereafter. The couple were stationed in Morocco where her husband spent two years in the Air Force. They returned to Coleman in central West Texas where she taught elementary school for six years. \nIn 1977\, she moved back to Pasadena and joined the family business where she \nworked for 34 years. After 60 years in business\, Tucker Hardware was closed in 2011. \nA previous member and international secretary of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority\, Carolyn also served as president of Soroptimist International of Pasadena\, a service organization. She was recognized as a Woman of Excellence at the 2000 Federation of Houston Professional Women Gala. She feels honored to be recently accepted into the DAR\, Daughters of the American Revolution\, Lady Washington Houston chapter. \nCarolyn became interested in presidential libraries when she attended the annual hardware market in Atlanta\, Georgia with her mother. They toured the library of President James E. “Jimmy” Carter. Thus began her mother’s collection of presidential plates\, which Carolyn now proudly possesses. The other presidential libraries she has visited include: John F. Kennedy\, Lyndon B. Johnson\, George H.W. Bush\, and George W. Bush and found each different and intriguing.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Be the Unicorn in Your World
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM \nFor decades\, apparel was a bit player in the promotional products marketplace. That changed starting in the 70s. An article written in 1978 stated\, “Americans Can’t Get Enough T-Shirts.” A confluence of factors—from the casualization of fashion to the advent of modern screen-printing technology—helped shift the humble tee from underwear to a closet staple and promotional hero. \n“Americans seem to have an insatiable desire to identify themselves with the slogans and photos on the T-shirts they wear\,” according to an article in the April 1978 issue of Counselor. Indeed\, Editor Paul A. Camp stated “Today everyone from dictators to ex-presidents’ wives\, for “head” shops to such staid giants as the New York Life Insurance Company use T-shirts to promote their images and hype their products. A Texas woman realized 1979 was the perfect time to start designing and printing T-shirts in her garage. \nWatching the men’s and women’s Sweet 16 Basketball tournaments\, she recognized how talented the women players are. Looking at businesses owned and managed by women\, you see how talented women are. A woman running a company can go as far and as quickly as a man. \nYou will learn how quickly Trademarks Promotional Products was ranked by Houston Business Journal in the top 25 women-owned business in Houston. Authentic leaders are self-aware\, honest\, and open in their dealings with others. They have a high emphasis on honesty and integrity. Be the Unicorn by William Vanderbloemen is a book that stresses the habits that separate the best leaders from the rest. \nSPEAKER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nAudrey Devenport is the last of a generation who grew up living on a farm in Illinois and attending a one-room country school with 16 other students and one teacher. She remembers doing homework by the light of a kerosene lantern until their house got electricity when she was ten. She learned to entertain the other students by drawing chalk pictures for them to color on the large black boards that covered the front of the school room. She went on to be chosen as one of the top ten seniors in her Southern Illinois University graduation class. \nShe taught high school\, and then joined the Red Cross Clubmobile Unit and was assigned to Korea. The first day she arrived\, she met a handsome young soldier who had also grown up on a farm. They married after their tours in Korea were over\, but then Mike went back as an Artillery Forward Observer to Vietnam for a year. After his tour\, they moved to Houston where Mike worked for Arthur Anderson Accounting firm. Audrey taught school and then became a sales rep for an educational company. \nIn 1970\, after their daughter\, Renelle\, was born\, Audrey opened a small business designing and selling T-shirts\, especially to schools. Renelle loved to help her Mom put designs on shirts. Renelle earned a degree in communications from the University of Texas\, and is now the vice president of Trademarks Promotional Products handling a multitude of jobs from sales to computers. Mike joined the company in the mid 80s. With his accounting and business background\, Audrey’s sales experience\, and Renelle’s overall expertise\, the company has grown to what it is today. Trademarks has 125 employees\, ten multi-color automatic screen presses\, 180 embroidery heads\, owns its own 52\,000 square foot tilt-wall building in Houston\, and has $12\,000\,000 in annual sales. \n \n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM \nIt’s such a common procedure today that one may never think about how our predecessors handled this vision problem in the past. Cataracts! After recently having both eyes surgically corrected for cataracts\, our speaker describes how easy the procedure was. \nBut what was this surgery like for our forerunners? You’ll discover the earliest recorded history of cataract surgery and the differing results that occurred in these early times. Today\, cataract surgery is such an easy process that most people take it for granted. \nCataract surgery has a long history in Europe\, Asia\, and Africa. It’s now one of the most common and successful surgical procedures in the world. This is thanks to improvements in the technique in removal of the cataract. Keep your eyes open and follow the trail on this visual journey. \n  \nSPEAKER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nIn 2010\, after almost 35 years as a dental hygienist\, Linda Percell left private practice to become a full-time educator. As a Clinical Director\, she was instrumental in forming that portion of the Dental Hygiene Program at Houston Community College (HCC)\, Coleman Campus\, which included both didactic and clinical studies. While teaching full-time at HCC\, she also challenged herself to complete her master’s degree in health sciences concentrating on Education. After achieving this accomplishment in 2012\, she decided to take a less stressful role and joined the Department of Dental Hygiene at Lone Star College in Kingwood as adjunct faculty until retirement. \nAfter retiring in 2016\, she now devotes time to her art which focuses on nature. She works with two disparate mediums: graphite and clay. Her studies with clay feature animals and the colors of nature. Her favored use of clay is in hand building and sculpting a myriad of animals in traditional form.\n\n\n\n

This program will explore the variety of emotions that we feel on a regular basis. You will learn where in our bodies we store some of those feelings. Also insights into how we can explore our feelings will be revealed. \nSPEAKER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nHelping others has been Rosemary Behrens’ mantra for as long as she can remember. SUMMARY:Dine and Discover What You Never Knew About the White House China
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM \nThis is a remarkable story spanning the 18th to the 21st centuries. It features a fascinating show and tell. You will see White House salad plates from our speaker’s collection. \nWe have a First Lady to thank for the reason the china of previous Presidents still exists today. Caroline Scott Harrison\, wife of our 23rd President\, Benjamin Harrison\, was blessed with considerable artistic talent and especially enjoyed painting on china. This led her to become engrossed in the history of the White House and its china. She was the First Lady to see that the china used by the leaders of our country was preserved. The popular Caroline\, also lent her prestige as First Lady to the founding of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR). She served as the first President General. \nThe program will pay special attention to the Abraham Lincoln china and its three surviving sets\, and will conclude with a First Ladies Presidential sweet treat. \nSPEAKER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarolyn Tucker Myers is originally from Memphis\, Tennessee. Her family moved to a suburb of Detroit\, Michigan where her father worked with General Motors. After five years of snow and ice\, he moved the family to Houston. In 1951\, her parents opened a hardware store in Pasadena\, where they both worked \nCarolyn graduated from Pasadena High School in 1955 and the University of Texas\, Austin\, in 1959\, and married shortly thereafter. The couple were stationed in Morocco where her husband spent two years in the Air Force. They returned to Coleman in central West Texas where she taught elementary school for six years. \nIn 1977\, she moved back to Pasadena with her only child\, a son. She joined the family business where she worked for 34 years. After the death of her parents and 60 years later\, Tucker Hardware was closed in 2011.

You will learn about the impacts of dramatic shifts in technology\, production techniques\, design\, economics\, and politics. The importance of the changing role of women in the rug industry will be revealed. Attendees will enjoy a catered Persian lunch and easy street level parking. \nThis field trip meeting is only open to current members and their invited guests. \nSPEAKER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nMehdi Abedi moved to Houston in 1981 to complete his Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology at Rice University. He also returned to his rug roots. Mehdi says\, “One of the first sounds I ever heard was the sound of weaving.” All four of his sisters were accomplished weavers in Yazd\, Iran. His daily route to school took him past the boiling dye pots and brightly colored wool hung to dry in the alleys. \nBeginning with just 10 small Hamadans in 1981\, he built an extensive rug collection and a loyal clientele. \nA few years later\, he began teaching other enthusiasts about Persian rugs through continuing education courses. \nLisa Slappey joined Mehdi as a partner in selling Persian rugs by private appointment. They acquired exhibit space in Carolyn Thompson’s Antique Center of Texas in 1996 and Pride of Persia Rug Company was born. They later expanded to feature about 4\,000 rugs in an 8\,000 sq ft showroom. In 2009\, Pride of Persia grew again by opening a beautiful new showroom in the Houston Design Center. \nTo meet the growing demand for Tibetan-style rugs\, Abedi and Slappey opened Postmodern Traditions Custom & Contemporary Rug Gallery in 2011. \nNext came their current home: a 9\,500 sq ft showroom in the Westport complex facing Old Katy Rd. This showroom features an extensive collection of antique and unusual Persian rugs from the cities\, tribes\, and villages of Iran along with select lines of hand-woven custom\, contemporary\, and decorative rugs from around the world. \nIncluded in this field trip meeting event is a wonderful complimentary Persian luncheon prepared by our speaker and amazing chef: Mehdi.\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Discover the Houston Grand Opera and Its Amazing Outreach
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM\nDid you know that Houston Grand Opera is one of the few opera companies that creates a brand-new opera for world debut each year? This keeps the art form modern and alive. Did you know that HGO runs a summer camp and produces Storybook Operas and Opera-to-Go! for children? HGO’s Seeking the Human Spirit series celebrates our city’s diversity with in-depth workshops\, conversations\, residencies\, and concerts focused on contemporary issues. One example is Giving Voice\, a celebration of Black opera singers singing arias\, gospel\, and spirituals at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church. Houston Grand Opera has one of the best opera apprentice programs in the world\, HGO Studio\, which just received a $22 million endowment – a grand investment in the future of opera. Find out more about how Houston Grand Opera is connecting with the Houston community. \nSPEAKER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJennifer Bowman joined Houston Grand Opera (HGO) in July 2022 as Director of Community and Learning. She leads HGO’s strategy and development of initiatives such as the creation of new operas and programming\, as well as performances and events for students\, families\, and educators in our community. \nFormally with the Kennedy Center’s Director of Music Education\, Bowman developed performance programming and educational initiatives in collaboration with the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO)\, Washington National Opera (WNO)\, and the Center’s hip-hop\, jazz\, and chamber music programs. She served as the Center’s lead representative for the Washington Musical Pathways Initiative for young Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color (BIPOC) artists wishing to pursue advanced study in music. She spearheaded WNO’s 18-month community engagement project in support of Blue\, an opera about a Harlem family’s experience with police brutality. She also revamped the Center’s training programs for young musicians\, commissioned new works that reflected the population of the region\, and introduced youth and family audiences to diverse artists. \nThe Houston native’s career began at the Kennedy Center\, where she coordinated professional development programs for more than 600 arts and cultural organizations in the US and abroad. She also spent six seasons managing The Folger Consort\, the early music ensemble at the Folger Shakespeare Library. In 2020\, she co-led Music Academy of the West’s transition to an online summer festival in response to the pandemic. Bowman is an alum of the Sphinx LEAD (Leaders in Excellence\, Arts and Diversity) program\, and serves on the board of the Soul Defined Percussive Dance Ensemble and National Instrumentalists Mentorship and Advancement Network. \nBowman graduated from Dartmouth College and the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University.\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Mysteries of Mud: A Short History of Clay
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM\nTravel back in time to man’s earliest uses of clay\, which like many discoveries\, happened by accident. This trail leads to significant dates and places in man’s history. You will be introduced to sculpting and how clay is formulated and fired today. The focus is on pieces that are thrown on a wheel\, hand-built\, or sculpted. \nAfter an insightful description of the history of clay and its use\, you will discover the different methods of throwing and sculpting. This includes creating the piece\, the kiln bisque\, glazing\, as well as the different ways to fire the final piece. You’ll gain insights into some of the major changes in the use and development of sculpture. Come discover the art of sculpting. \nSPEAKER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2010\, after almost 35 years as a dental hygienist\, Linda Percell left private practice to become a full-time educator.  As Clinical Director\, she was instrumental in forming that portion of the Dental Hygiene Program at Houston Community College (HCC)\, Coleman Campus\, which included both didactic and clinical studies. While teaching full-time at HCC\, she also challenged herself to complete her master’s degree in Health Sciences concentrating on Education. After achieving this accomplishment in 2012\, she decided to take a less stressful role and joined the Department of Dental Hygiene at Lone Star College in Kingwood as adjunct faculty. \nAfter working and teaching in the field of dental hygiene and retiring in 2016\, Linda has devoted her time to her art. She realized after working so precisely with her hands for more 40 years\, that her talent would certainly crossover to clay. Her studies with clay feature animals and the colors of nature. She favors hand building and sculpting a myriad of animals in traditional form. \n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Downsizing: Be Careful What You Keep
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM \nOver time\, a person’s life can become a wonderful wastebasket of ideas and gifts and appropriations. Chris Rogers’ life\, never a straight route from point to point\, has been reinvented many times\, each with its own baggage. In 1962\, an unexplained fire took her home and possessions. In 1982\, lightning caused a fire that gutted her studio/office. Cramming everything she could save into storage\, Rogers retained one art table to continue her business\, then after a year\, opened that storage unit to realize nothing inside was worth saving. \nIn more recent years\, Rogers – now an established author and painter – elected to downsize her life again. She sold her home to enjoy spending time with her oldest daughter and son-in-law. To accommodate that change\, she happily reduced life and its many possessions to a bedroom with attached bath… plus a recently reinvented storage unit. \nIn this program\, Rogers will guide you toward a plan for how to keep what you must and how to choose what to lose. \n\n\nSPEAKER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Rogers\, the Story Painter\, is author of nine novels\, about 40 or so short stories\, and various magazine or newspaper articles. She has been published in Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine and Writers Digest Magazine\, among others. Her books can often be found in libraries or bookstores and always on Amazon. Rogers also paints both abstract and representational art. Early in her painting career\, she began to include in selected artwork a few words or sentences from her stories. Her art is displayed at Withrow Furniture in Teague\, Texas and often in Texas galleries. \n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Do You Know What You Have?
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM\nLiving in the greater Houston area means living with hurricanes\, floods and other destructive weather events. Like people everywhere we also face possible losses from fire\, burglary\, broken water pipes\, etc. \nMany Houstonians have adequate insurance to cover the financial cost of such events; however\, they are often not prepared for the overwhelming task of filing a major claim\, especially during what can be an emotionally challenging time.   The crucial question becomes “Do you know what you have?” \nBeth Szescila will reveal a number of things you should do now to be better prepared for the aftermath of a catastrophic event…should you ever have to face one. This program will help you sleep better knowing you have the necessary tools to confidently deal with a major loss. \n\n\nSPEAKER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrior to retiring\, Beth Szescila was a certified member of the International Society of Appraisers\, holding certifications in the appraisal of Fine Arts\, as well as of Antiques and Residential Contents.   For 18 years Beth was a member of the appraiser panel on the PBS series Antiques Roadshow. \nIn her profession\, she frequently helped clients deal with complicated insurance-related matters. She assisted them in a number of ways such as appraising items for insurance scheduling and determining the value of lost\, stolen\, or destroyed property.  Beth’s years of experience taught her the importance of preparation and organization before a loss.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Settle the Differences in the Family Living Inside
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM\nYou know that we each have a family around us. Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a counseling theory that examines the family inside us. You know when “a part of me wants to do this and another part of me wants to do that.” The family inside us is essentially all those “parts”—the oftentimes-conflicted sub-personalities that reside within us.These sub-personalities sometimes contain wounded parts and painful emotions such as anger or shame. Other parts try to control and protect you from the pain of those wounded parts. \nIFS examines the parts that make up the family inside. This provides a better understanding of the parts that can hold us back. Then we can work with those parts to become a whole and healthy internal family system. Come along as we explore how our inner child\, inner critic\, and the people-pleasing adult within us can get along much better. \n\n\nSPEAKER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHelping others has been Rosemary Behrens\, PhD.\, LPC-S’s mantra for as long as she can remember. In working with counseling issues\, she enjoys helping others to learn coping skills\, move past relationship issues\, and see their full potential. She sees significant value in assisting clients coping with grief as they remember a loved one and work to move to a place of peace with their loss. Rosemary enjoys working with individuals\, couples\, children and adolescents. She uses Cognitive-Behavioral\, Adlerian\, Family Systems\, and Existential theories\, and she believes in addressing the whole person encompassing body\, mind\, and spirit. As a licensed professional counselor-supervisor\, Rosemary assists counseling associates in accomplishing their goal of becoming fully licensed counselors.
