SUMMARY:Change Happens
DESCRIPTION:Change goes on all around us every day\, and throughout our lifetime. Sometimes change happens in ways we were not anticipating—losing a job\, losing a loved one\, friends moving away. Other times change happens as we purposefully decide to make a change—starting a positive habit\, ending a negative habit. Some change happens quickly—a major appliance breaks down and must be replaced\, adjusting to a new job. Sneaking up on us is another quality of change—where did the time go? Whatever the change\, it can often have a big impact on our overall mental health. Come learn how can we better cope with change. \n  \nSPEAKER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nRosemary Behrens\, PhD.\, LPC-S \nHelping others has been Rosemary Behrens’ mantra for as long as she can remember. With Inner Peace Counselors (http://www.innerpeacesounselors.com) Rosemary enjoys guiding others to learn coping skills\, move past relationship issues\, and see their full potential. She received her Masters of Arts in Counseling in 2008 and her license as a professional counselor from the state of Texas in 2011. In 2018\, she received her doctoral degree (PhD) in Counselor Education. She is also currently teaching as an adjunct professor at Houston Graduate School of Theology.

SUMMARY:First Ladies of the United States of America and Their Cookies
DESCRIPTION:Dolley Payne Todd Madison \n  \nAs we continue our review of The First Ladies of the United States and Their Cookies\, we will study the life of Dolley Madison. You’ll be introduced to the wife of our fourth President James Madison. \n  \nMeet Dolley Madison\, a fascinating First Lady known by history for two reasons: She saved Washington’s portrait as the White House was being burned by the British. And Dolley helped Madison organize his papers concerning the birth of the nation\, while managing to also save a copy of the Declaration of Independence. \n  \nPreviously\, we have had a glimpse into the lives of Martha Washington\, Abigail Adams\, Mary Lincoln\, Elizabeth “Bess” Truman\, plus more in-depth studies of Eleanor Roosevelt\, Claudia “Lady Bird” Johnson\, Jacqueline Kennedy\, and Rosalyn Carter. \n  \nOur program will conclude with a tasting of Dolley’s Apple Date Nut Brownies and Coconut Macaroons. \n  \nYou will find the life of Dolley Madison surprising\, entertaining\, and intriguing. \n\nSPEAKER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nCarolyn Tucker Myers is originally from Memphis\, Tennessee. Her family moved to a suburb of Detroit\, Michigan where her father worked with General Motors. After five years of snow and ice\, he moved the family south. Texas was chosen because of an uncle in Dallas and friends in Houston. In 1951\, her parents opened a hardware store in Pasadena\, where they both worked. \n  \nCarolyn graduated from Pasadena High School in 1955 and the University of Texas\, Austin\, in 1959\, and married shortly thereafter. The newlyweds were stationed in Morocco where her husband spent two years in the Air Force. They returned to Coleman in central West Texas where she taught elementary school for six years. \n  \nIn 1977\, she moved back to Pasadena with her only child\, a son\, and joined the family business.  After the death of her parents and 60 years later\, Tucker Hardware was closed in 2011 and thus\, closed a chapter in the family’s history. \n  \nA previous member and international secretary of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority\, Carolyn also served as president of Soroptimist International of Pasadena\, a service organization. Soroptimist International honored her as Woman of Excellence at the 2000 Federation of Houston Professional Women Gala. \n  \nShe became interested in presidential libraries when she attended the annual hardware market in Atlanta\, Georgia with her mother. They toured the library of President James E. “Jimmy” Carter. Thus began her mother’s collection of presidential plates\, which Carolyn now proudly possesses. The other presidential libraries she has visited include: John F. Kennedy\, Lyndon B. Johnson\, George H.W. Bush\, and George W. Bush and found each different and intriguing. \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:How to Tease the Words Out
DESCRIPTION:Everyone has a story: you\, your parents\, your children. Not every story is bestseller material\, but every life well lived is worth remembering. In fact\, every life holds many stories. That time at the river\, when your sister found an old rope hanging from a tree and yelled\, “Bet I can swing out and jump in farther than you!” No one snapped a picture\, yet it was a grand time worthy of being remembered. Someone should write it down. If not you\, then who? \n\nSPEAKER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nChris Rogers is best known for her mystery and suspense fiction. In 1998\, her first novel\, Bitch Factor\, was published by Bantam Books\, followed by Rage Factor and Chill Factor. While continuing as a novelist\, Chris also taught continuing education classes in writing at the University of Houston\, Rice University School of Continuing Studies\, and the Women’s Institute of Houston. Meanwhile\, Chris has served as a ghostwriter for many people who have a story to tell but aren’t quite sure how to get the words down.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:How to Discover a Book’s True Value
DESCRIPTION:You’ve heard the old saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Certainly a book’s outside may be what first attracts us\, but there are plenty of other factors that go into determining a book’s value. And a book’s value to us may be different than its value to others. \nLee Steiner will discuss the elements that go into placing not only a monetary\, but also a cultural and personal value\, on the books in our lives. Lee will show examples of volumes that may be worth a fortune to one person yet are merely a dime a dozen to another person. \nShe’ll share some important resources for checking out your own library’s value and you will come away with a fresh appreciation of the treasures hidden in plain view on your own bookshelves. \n\n SPEAKER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Native Texan Lee Steiner is a Houston book artist. Lee’s handmade books feature a “vintage vibe\,” no doubt because she grew up in a creative family of handmakers and antique/junk collectors always on the look-out for new and old inspiration. The name of Lee’s studio\, Domestic Papers\, comes from her love of everything paper and her love of travel to faraway places in search of cool finds for her studio. Her travel is always accompanied by the promise of returning home to domestic bliss. Lee makes custom map travel journals\, sketchbooks from library discards\, and one-of-a-kind\, warm\, blank paper-filled journals that writers love to get their hands on. She also teaches bookbinding at local museums and through her Domestic Papers studio.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Markers\, Monuments\, and More: How to Navigate the Purchase of a Memorial
DESCRIPTION:Gain inside information into the importance of preplanning your marker or monuments. Monument design options will be covered. You’ll find out that markers can be enhanced with photographic reproductions in porcelain\, steel\, or they can be actually laser etched into the granite. You will learn about the different colors of granite available as well as options such as flower vases that can be created from granite or bronze. Then we’ll have to talk about funeral plots because different cemeteries enforce different rules specifying the types of monuments they allow. Many families are upset to learn that after their loved one has passed\, they are prevented from having the upright marker they prefer\, or they are required to place only an expensive bronze piece. \nWith the rising interest in cremation\, a run-down of what to know about those burial plot options will be revealed. You’ll come away with an awareness of the sometimes unexpected “add on” costs. The more you do now to prepare\, preplan\, and inform your family\, the more peace of mind they will have at a time of loss. \n\nSPEAKER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nMarlinda Merryman is the office manager and lead sales director for Robbins Monuments established in 1919 and located in the Houston Heights. Marlinda helps to create\, design\, order\, and schedule the installation of markers\, monuments\, and family estate pieces for cemeteries in the Greater Houston area.  With Robbins Monuments since 2017\, she had a long career in event sales and planning. Her passion to help shows in how she works to create that special memorial to represent the legacy of her clients’ loved ones. She advocates for educating families to prepare for the future. Away from the office\, Marlinda speaks on the importance of nutrition and describes her journey on The Daniel Plan. A native Houstonian\, she now resides in New Caney with her husband. She is a proud mom of three adult children and grandmother to six grandchildren.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Why Fossil Fuels Are Good
DESCRIPTION:Are fossil fuels ruining the planet? Or are oil and natural gas actually helping humans thrive and flourish? To figure out whether fossil fuels are good or bad\, we must carefully look at the benefits\, risks\, and side effects of all the alternatives. Three billion people on this planet do not have affordable\, reliable energy; and wind and solar are simply not available 24/7.\nThe fossil fuel industry increases productivity and prosperity in every area of life\, from agriculture to medicine. Jeanne Perdue will discuss the benefits of fossil fuels and weigh them in the balance with climate concerns about carbon dioxide (CO2)\, concluding that we should be producing more fossil fuels\, not less\, if improving the quality and length of human life is the ultimate goal.\n\nSPEAKER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nJeanne M. Perdue has been a Technical Writer at Occidental Petroleum for the past 8 years. She posts a writing tip of the day on the company’s Yammer website and teaches an Oil Patch Writing class to Oxy colleagues in Houston and the Middle East. \nAfter earning a BS in Chemistry at SUNY at Albany\, she worked in the Texaco research labs for 14 years before becoming an oilfield journalist for Hart’s E&P and Upstream Technology magazines. \nA Distinguished Member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers\, Jeanne served as 2014-15 Chair of the SPE Gulf Coast Section. After being elected to the Alief ISD school board and serving 10 years as President of the Alief Education Foundation\, she now serves on the Houston Community College Foundation Board and the Univ. of Houston Petroleum Engineering Advisory Board.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Learn Life Hacks: Products and Processes from the Pros…Us!
DESCRIPTION:A life hack refers to any trick\, shortcut\, skill\, product\, or method that increases productivity and efficiency. We all have our ways to accelerate workflow and solve problems. This program will be a sharing Show-and-Tell. Each member will educate us and introduce us to a product or process of which we may not be aware that they count on as necessary to efficient functioning. Example: Post-It®tape.\nBe thinking of innovative fixes\, or simple work-arounds\, a solution that bends the rules\, or products of which others might not be aware. You can show and demonstrate ordinary resources that can be used in new ways. \nTogether we probably have hundreds of wily little tricks to make existing things work better\, or to create new uses for other items. Each member will be timed to one minute and we’ll go around the table as many times as needed to present all the life hacks we have in the time allotted. \nLife hacks to get you started:\n* Stick a paper clip to the end of a roll of tape.\n* Keep a safety pin on your key ring or pin one to your purse’s interior zipper pull.\n* Affix a folded post-it note to catch sawdust when drilling a hole. \n\nSPEAKER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nLeigh Owen is a connector. She is passionate about matching people with other people\, places\, and ideas. She receives joy when offering a spark of information or intelligent advice that can make a difference. She is often told\, “You know things!” This meeting will match people with new life hacks and you’ll come away knowing things too. \nBorn in Jacksonville\, Texas\, Leigh received her B.S. from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. After graduating\, her first real job was in book publishing and it became her lifelong career. She began by designing books and handling their production and printing for Gulf Publishing Company. Through 20 plus years as director of marketing for Gulf’s book division\, she designed and wrote book-marketing campaigns geared to reach libraries\, bookstores\, and individual book buyers. Next came a decade as director of marketing for Vickie Milazzo Institute\, the oldest and largest legal nurse consulting education institute in the nation and the only publishing company dedicated to that field. Leigh then spent seven years overseeing the Institute’s educational publishing where she guided special publishing projects and the editing of online learning materials. \nLeigh thrives on making connections between the people and the organizations she knows throughout her favorite city—Houston. She is a past president of the Federation of Houston Professional Women(FHPW)\, Houston Focus on Concerns for Women (HFCW)\, and the 501(c)(3) FHPW Educational Foundation. She served 20 years as a member of the University of Houston Friends of Women’s Studies (FWS) board and is a lifetime member of FWS. She also served as chair of the advisory board of Women in the Visual and Literary Arts(WIVLA). At the request of UH Dean of Libraries Lisa German\, Leigh is honored to be a member of the UH Libraries Dean’s Campaign Committee and Cabinet supporting the Rare Books Collections. \nLeigh enjoys her creative side as a member of the Houston Book Arts Guild\, Houston Calligraphers Guild\, and the Houston Visual Journalers. Leigh lives in the Houston Heights with her husband Tim Calk. She writes haiku and personal essay\, goes birding with her husband\, and creates art cards and mail art. Her favorite medium is collage.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Crazy Love: The Signs of Domestic Abuse
DESCRIPTION:Domestic abuse comes in many varieties and is not restricted to socioeconomic level\, age or culture. Nor is it restricted to physical abuse. When we can gain a better understanding of the cycle of abuse and the different types of abuse we can better identify when loved ones are in the midst of abusive situations. That is just the beginning. What the abuse victim needs most is love and care and an outlet to share their struggles. What they do not need is a savior to swoop in and save the day. Explore with me how we can increase our understanding of the ways that abuse is delivered\, the cyclic nature of abuse and how we can be the most help to those in need. \n\nSPEAKER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nHelping others has been Rosemary Behrens’ mantra for as long as she can remember.  In working with counseling issues\, she enjoys helping others to learn coping skills\, to move past relationship issues\, and to see their full potential. She received her Masters of Arts in Counseling in 2008 and her PhD in Counselor Education in May of this year. SUMMARY:The Zen of Abstraction - Tips for Turning Your Napkin Doodles into Abstract Art\, and Why It’s Good for You
DESCRIPTION:Waiting can be excruciatingly tedious. Patience is having something to do in the meantime. If you’ve ever drawn a smiley face\, or used circles to dot your i’s\, then you already know about doodling. Perhaps while waiting for your lunch to arrive from a restaurant’s kitchen you’ve even taken your doodles even further\, into the intricate patterns known as Zentangles. \nFrom there it’s a slippery slide into abstract painting. In fact\, this type of doodling is how Chris Rogers first began to appreciate and explore the fine art of abstraction. \nIs it therapeutic? According to Popular Psychology\, perhaps it is. Individuals have reported that engaging in art expression helps them focus on the present moment. Art is a safe place to communicate emotions\, and the positive outcomes possible with simple abstract imagery can strengthen self image. \nWhile Chris Rogers is no psychologist\, she can speak to the sheer enjoyment of turning doodles\, scribbles\, or a few words written in cursive into a joyful explosion of line\, shape and color. She does it daily\, on canvases from 6”x6” to 36”x48”. Chris’s work can frequently be seen at various locations in Bryan-College Station\, Waco and Conroe\, and preceding her talk in April a number of paintings will be displayed at both the Carleen Bright Arboretum and Marriott’s Springhill Suites in Woodway\, Texas \n\nSPEAKER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nChris Rogers is a Texas artist and novelist. Her stories cover an array of genres\, including mystery\, suspense\, paranormal and science fiction. As a ghostwriter\, she co-authors nonfiction. She has published books on writing\, such as Goosing the Write Brain: A Storyteller’s Toolkit\, and speaks often at writing seminars. Her work has been included in Writer’s Digest Magazine\, Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine\, A Taste of Murder\, various anthologies and\, most recently\, a Writer’s Digest book – Crafting Dynamic Dialogue. Chris’s artwork can be found at various Texas venues\, galleries and online. She conducts abstract painting workshops that attract participants from beginner to professional. Chris is Administrative Director of Houston Focus on Concerns for Women\, Membership Chair of the Brazos Valley Art League\, and Secretary of Troupe Over the Hill. ChrisRogers.com\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:With stories about prehistoric characters Lucy\, Ethel\, Larry\, Curly and Moe\, Margaret will explain why\, in hunter-gatherer days\, humans selected for greed and envy in order to survive. Nowadays\, these traits sometimes defeat our own interests\, especially when seeking consensus. But we can modify that hard wiring. SUMMARY:Discover the Secrets of a Library That Acts Like a Museum
DESCRIPTION:You’ll be surprised and enchanted to hear stories and tidbits of information about some of the treasures in the University of Houston Rare Books Collections\, one of the 13 different collections housed in the Special Collections of the MD Anderson Library on the UH campus. \nOf the UH Library’s 3.2 million volumes\, more than 106\,000 are part of the Rare Books Collections. They are kept in secure\, climate-controlled book stacks\, until they come out to the reading room for teaching and study by students and the general public. The rare books are used for research as well as for educating at the undergraduate and graduate levels in classes ranging from medieval art to the Victorian novel to African American poetry. \nThe oldest item in the collection will astonish you. And you will be amazed to discover that the pages of the King James Bible printed in 1611 are the size of cookie-sheets. If you need help in identifying the three different types of dragons\, Topsell’s The History of Four-footed Beasts and Serpents published in 1658 will guide you. \nYou’ll also come away with details about Houston’s largest Tier One university\, with a student population of 45\,000. \n\nSPEAKER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nLeigh Owen loves books. In fact\, she still has her scrapbooks from when she was six. Leigh believes that books are the true treasures of our human history and she is passionate about helping to preserve these jewels. \nBorn in Jacksonville\, Texas\, Leigh received her B.S. from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. After graduating\, her first real job was in book publishing and it not only fired her continuing love of books\, it became a lifelong career. \nLeigh first learned the book publishing business by designing books and handling their production and printing for Gulf Publishing Company. Now Leigh is in charge of the Institute’s educational publishing where she guides special publishing projects and the editing of online learning materials. \nLeigh thrives on making connections between the people and organizations she knows throughout her favorite city—Houston. She is a past president of the Federation of Houston Professional Women (FHPW)\, Houston Focus on Concerns for Women (HFCW)\, and the 501(c)(3) FHPW Educational Foundation. SUMMARY:First Ladies of the United States of America and Their Cookies
DESCRIPTION: The First Ladies of the United States are all fascinating and each is unique. In previous HFCW programs\, we have glimpsed the lives of Martha Washington\, Abigail Adams\, Mary Lincoln\, Dolly Madison\, Elizabeth “Bess” Truman\, Eleanor Roosevelt\, Claudia “Lady Bird” Johnson\, and Jacqueline Kennedy. \nRosalynn Carter\, a Departure from Tradition and a Great Lady\nWe will now learn much about the life of our 39th First Lady\, Eleanor Rosalynn Smith Carter. Her adventure in life is a definitely different from many other First Ladies\, especially the early ones. \nWhere Everyone Knows Your Name\nRosalynn’s upbringing in the Lutheran\, Baptist\, and Methodist Churches shaped her life in the tiny town of Plains\, Georgia. Family duties were important after the death of her father. We’ll also learn about her social life and courtship with her friend’s brother\, Jimmy Carter. This includes interesting tidbits on Jimmy’s Navy career and the Carter Peanut Farm. \nBack to the Future and the Peanut Brigade Goes National\nNext we examine Jimmy and Rosalynn as soul mates and tell how she helped him win the Presidential election. Their system is a change from the typical campaign ritual\, but absolutely necessary. \nChange of Address\nNow that President James Earl Carter and First Lady Rosalynn have moved into the White House\, you’ll discover that she was a visible participant who championed causes of her own. \nAn Added Treat\nThen enjoy a tasting of Rosalynn’s Pecan Squares\, which were often served instead of the traditional pecan pie and Amy’s peanut butter cookies. \n\nSPEAKER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nCarolyn Tucker Myers: Originally from Memphis\, Tennessee\, her family moved to a suburb of Detroit\, Michigan where her father gained employment with General Motors. After five years of snow and ice\, he moved the family south. Texas was chosen because Carolyn’s mother had a brother in Dallas and they had friends in Houston. In 1951 Carolyn’s father opened a hardware store in Pasadena where both her parents worked. \nCarolyn graduated from Pasadena High School in 1955 and the University of Texas\, Austin\, in 1959 and married shortly thereafter. Her husband was in the Air Force and after spending two years stationed in Morocco\, they returned to Coleman in central West Texas where she taught elementary school for six years. \nIn 1977\, she moved back to Pasadena with her only child\, a son\, and joined the family business. After the death of her parents and 60 years after its founding\, Tucker Hardware was closed in 2011 and thus\, ended a chapter in the family’s history. \nCarolyn’s extreme interest in presidential libraries began when she and her mother attended the hardware market in Atlanta\, Georgia. Staying an extra day to sightsee\, they toured the library of President James E. “Jimmy” Carter. Now Carolyn proudly possesses the collection of presidential plates\, which her mother started on their trip. The other libraries she visited are: John F. Kennedy\, Lyndon B. Johnson\, George H.W. Bush\, and George W. Bush. Each is different and intriguing. \nCarolyn is a past member and officer of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority and of Soroptimist International of Pasadena\, a service organization.\n\n\n\n
