SUMMARY:Behind the Scenes of a Renowned Artist-Owned Gallery: Can Artists Operate a Gallery? For 43 Years?
DESCRIPTION:Discover a dynamic artist-owned and artist-managed gallery that has been in business since 1976. Learn how Archway Gallery got its name and see how it holds a part of the thriving Houston art community. Currently\, the gallery has 32 artists who represent an array of styles and media. In true Houston fashion\, these artists come from around the globe and share their diverse backgrounds. \nArchway Gallery finds it important to give back to our community. Besides a monthly opening reception\, the gallery frequently hosts musical and dance performances\, literary readings\, and figure-drawing sessions. Generally free\, these distinctive events are open to the public. To include area artists in a high-profile exhibition\, Archway provides the rare opportunity of a juried exhibition to show their works. During this annual exhibition\, Archway partners with and promotes a charity. \nSPEAKER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBorn in 1953 and raised in Pasadena\, Texas\, Liz Conces Spencer studied art at the University of St. Thomas in Houston\, graduating with a BA/ART in 1975.  She has shown her work extensively since 1976 in galleries\, festivals\, competitive exhibitions and alternative spaces.  An active member of the cooperative Archway Gallery in Houston\, she has worked at Mother Dog Studios since the mid-1990’s. \nPast commissions include works for the Houston Arts Alliance\, the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center\, Talento Bilingue of Houston\, Cool Globes\, Silver Eagle Distributing\, The City of Houston\, Camp Aranzazu\, the Houston Congregation for Reform Judaism\, Weingarten Art Group\, Lamar Towers\, and the Catholic Archdiocese of Galveston/Houston.  She works solo or collaboratively\, frequently with glass artist Gene Hester. \nA teaching artist for Young Audiences of Houston\, she works with children\, teens and adults and writes professional development content for teachers and teaching artists. \nA full resume is available at www.lizconces.com.\n\n\n\n
