SUMMARY:First Ladies of the United States of America and Their Cookies: Abigail Quincy Smith Adams
DESCRIPTION:As we continue our review of the First Ladies of the United States and Their Cookies\, we will study the life of Abigail Adams. You will be introduced to the wife of our second President\, John Adams. \nMeet Abigail Adams\, an emotionally strong and intelligent woman who was the first to move into a partially finished President’s House\, now known as the White House. She was devoted to John and wrote letters to him daily. She was keenly interested in politics and included her views in these letters as well as personal messages. \nPreviously\, we have had a glimpse into the lives of Martha Washington\, Mary Lincoln\, and Elizabeth “Bess” Truman\, plus more in depth studies of Eleanor Roosevelt\, Claudia “Lady Bird” Johnson\, Jacqueline Kennedy\, Rosalyn Carter\, and Dolley Madison. \nOur program will conclude with a tasting of Abigail’s Brandy Snaps. \n  \n\nSPEAKER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarolyn Tucker Myers is originally from Memphis\, Tennessee. Her family moved to a suburb of Detroit\, Michigan where her father worked with General Motors. After five years of snow and ice\, he moved the family south. Texas was chosen because of an uncle in Dallas and friends in Houston. In 1951\, her parents opened a hardware store in Pasadena\, where they both worked. \nCarolyn graduated from Pasadena High School in 1955 and the University of Texas\, Austin\, in 1959\, and married shortly thereafter. The newlyweds were stationed in Morocco where her husband spent two years in the Air Force. They returned to Coleman in central West Texas where she taught elementary school for six years.\nIn 1977\, she moved back to Pasadena with her only child\, a son\, and joined the family business. After the death of her parents and 60 years later\, Tucker Hardware was closed in 2011 and thus\, closed a chapter in the family’s history. \nA previous member and international secretary of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority\, Carolyn also served as president of Soroptimist International of Pasadena\, a service organization. Soropitmist International honored her as Woman of Excellence at the 2000 Federation of Houston Professional Women Gala. \nShe became interested in presidential libraries when she attended the annual hardware market in Atlanta\, Georgia with her mother. SUMMARY:Sparkle Swap - Go Shopping Without Spending a Dime
DESCRIPTION:Our dazzling holiday party will be a time when our accessories come out to shimmer and find new homes. \nBring costume jewelry\, twinkling pins\, handbags\, fuzzy neck scarves\, evening clutches\, pashminas\, shawls\, and headscarves that you no longer wear. You’ll have fun traveling back through your jewelry and accessories to select unbroken\, clean pieces for their different lives with someone else. \nWith a twinkle in our eyes we’ll draw names and watch as each person selects one article in lucky order. If there is a story to tell about the item selected\, the person who donated it may choose to briefly share the story. \nAfter everyone has made their first glittering choice\, the remaining goodies are there for your one-for-one trades (bring three items\, select one to three items; bring ten items\, select one to ten items). Sets (necklaces with matching earrings or bracelets) count as one piece. \nWhen all sparkle swapping is complete\, but some items remain\, they are then available to anyone who wants them. \nBe sure to bring a good-sized gift bag to tote your new shiny sparkles home. At the end of our party\, any remaining items will be donated. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Change Happens
DESCRIPTION:Change goes on all around us every day\, and throughout our lifetime. Sometimes change happens in ways we were not anticipating—losing a job\, losing a loved one\, friends moving away. Other times change happens as we purposefully decide to make a change—starting a positive habit\, ending a negative habit. Some change happens quickly—a major appliance breaks down and must be replaced\, adjusting to a new job. Sneaking up on us is another quality of change—where did the time go? Whatever the change\, it can often have a big impact on our overall mental health. Come learn how can we better cope with change. \n  \nSPEAKER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nRosemary Behrens\, PhD.\, LPC-S \nHelping others has been Rosemary Behrens’ mantra for as long as she can remember. With Inner Peace Counselors (http://www.innerpeacesounselors.com) Rosemary enjoys guiding others to learn coping skills\, move past relationship issues\, and see their full potential. She received her Masters of Arts in Counseling in 2008 and her license as a professional counselor from the state of Texas in 2011. In 2018\, she received her doctoral degree (PhD) in Counselor Education. She is also currently teaching as an adjunct professor at Houston Graduate School of Theology.

SUMMARY:How to Tease the Words Out
DESCRIPTION:Everyone has a story: you\, your parents\, your children. Not every story is bestseller material\, but every life well lived is worth remembering. In fact\, every life holds many stories. That time at the river\, when your sister found an old rope hanging from a tree and yelled\, “Bet I can swing out and jump in farther than you!” No one snapped a picture\, yet it was a grand time worthy of being remembered. Someone should write it down. If not you\, then who? \n\nSPEAKER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nChris Rogers is best known for her mystery and suspense fiction. In 1998\, her first novel\, Bitch Factor\, was published by Bantam Books\, followed by Rage Factor and Chill Factor. While continuing as a novelist\, Chris also taught continuing education classes in writing at the University of Houston\, Rice University School of Continuing Studies\, and the Women’s Institute of Houston. Meanwhile\, Chris has served as a ghostwriter for many people who have a story to tell but aren’t quite sure how to get the words down.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:How to Discover a Book’s True Value
DESCRIPTION:You’ve heard the old saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Certainly a book’s outside may be what first attracts us\, but there are plenty of other factors that go into determining a book’s value. And a book’s value to us may be different than its value to others. \nLee Steiner will discuss the elements that go into placing not only a monetary\, but also a cultural and personal value\, on the books in our lives. Lee will show examples of volumes that may be worth a fortune to one person yet are merely a dime a dozen to another person. \nShe’ll share some important resources for checking out your own library’s value and you will come away with a fresh appreciation of the treasures hidden in plain view on your own bookshelves. \n\n SPEAKER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Native Texan Lee Steiner is a Houston book artist. Lee’s handmade books feature a “vintage vibe\,” no doubt because she grew up in a creative family of handmakers and antique/junk collectors always on the look-out for new and old inspiration. The name of Lee’s studio\, Domestic Papers\, comes from her love of everything paper and her love of travel to faraway places in search of cool finds for her studio. Her travel is always accompanied by the promise of returning home to domestic bliss. Lee makes custom map travel journals\, sketchbooks from library discards\, and one-of-a-kind\, warm\, blank paper-filled journals that writers love to get their hands on. She also teaches bookbinding at local museums and through her Domestic Papers studio.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Markers\, Monuments\, and More: How to Navigate the Purchase of a Memorial
DESCRIPTION:Gain inside information into the importance of preplanning your marker or monuments. Monument design options will be covered. You’ll find out that markers can be enhanced with photographic reproductions in porcelain\, steel\, or they can be actually laser etched into the granite. You will learn about the different colors of granite available as well as options such as flower vases that can be created from granite or bronze. Then we’ll have to talk about funeral plots because different cemeteries enforce different rules specifying the types of monuments they allow. Many families are upset to learn that after their loved one has passed\, they are prevented from having the upright marker they prefer\, or they are required to place only an expensive bronze piece. \nWith the rising interest in cremation\, a run-down of what to know about those burial plot options will be revealed. You’ll come away with an awareness of the sometimes unexpected “add on” costs. The more you do now to prepare\, preplan\, and inform your family\, the more peace of mind they will have at a time of loss. \n\nSPEAKER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nMarlinda Merryman is the office manager and lead sales director for Robbins Monuments established in 1919 and located in the Houston Heights. Marlinda helps to create\, design\, order\, and schedule the installation of markers\, monuments\, and family estate pieces for cemeteries in the Greater Houston area.  With Robbins Monuments since 2017\, she had a long career in event sales and planning. Her passion to help shows in how she works to create that special memorial to represent the legacy of her clients’ loved ones. She advocates for educating families to prepare for the future. Away from the office\, Marlinda speaks on the importance of nutrition and describes her journey on The Daniel Plan. A native Houstonian\, she now resides in New Caney with her husband. She is a proud mom of three adult children and grandmother to six grandchildren.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Why Fossil Fuels Are Good
DESCRIPTION:Are fossil fuels ruining the planet? Or are oil and natural gas actually helping humans thrive and flourish? To figure out whether fossil fuels are good or bad\, we must carefully look at the benefits\, risks\, and side effects of all the alternatives. Three billion people on this planet do not have affordable\, reliable energy; and wind and solar are simply not available 24/7.\nThe fossil fuel industry increases productivity and prosperity in every area of life\, from agriculture to medicine. Jeanne Perdue will discuss the benefits of fossil fuels and weigh them in the balance with climate concerns about carbon dioxide (CO2)\, concluding that we should be producing more fossil fuels\, not less\, if improving the quality and length of human life is the ultimate goal.\n\nSPEAKER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nJeanne M. Perdue has been a Technical Writer at Occidental Petroleum for the past 8 years. She posts a writing tip of the day on the company’s Yammer website and teaches an Oil Patch Writing class to Oxy colleagues in Houston and the Middle East. \nAfter earning a BS in Chemistry at SUNY at Albany\, she worked in the Texaco research labs for 14 years before becoming an oilfield journalist for Hart’s E&P and Upstream Technology magazines. \nA Distinguished Member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers\, Jeanne served as 2014-15 Chair of the SPE Gulf Coast Section. After being elected to the Alief ISD school board and serving 10 years as President of the Alief Education Foundation\, she now serves on the Houston Community College Foundation Board and the Univ. of Houston Petroleum Engineering Advisory Board.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Learn Life Hacks: Products and Processes from the Pros…Us!
DESCRIPTION:A life hack refers to any trick\, shortcut\, skill\, product\, or method that increases productivity and efficiency. We all have our ways to accelerate workflow and solve problems. This program will be a sharing Show-and-Tell. Each member will educate us and introduce us to a product or process of which we may not be aware that they count on as necessary to efficient functioning. Example: Post-It®tape.\nBe thinking of innovative fixes\, or simple work-arounds\, a solution that bends the rules\, or products of which others might not be aware. You can show and demonstrate ordinary resources that can be used in new ways. \nTogether we probably have hundreds of wily little tricks to make existing things work better\, or to create new uses for other items. Each member will be timed to one minute and we’ll go around the table as many times as needed to present all the life hacks we have in the time allotted. \nLife hacks to get you started:\n* Stick a paper clip to the end of a roll of tape.\n* Keep a safety pin on your key ring or pin one to your purse’s interior zipper pull.\n* Affix a folded post-it note to catch sawdust when drilling a hole. \n\nSPEAKER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nLeigh Owen is a connector. She is passionate about matching people with other people\, places\, and ideas. She receives joy when offering a spark of information or intelligent advice that can make a difference. Leigh then spent seven years overseeing the Institute’s educational publishing where she guided special publishing projects and the editing of online learning materials. \nLeigh thrives on making connections between the people and the organizations she knows throughout her favorite city—Houston. She is a past president of the Federation of Houston Professional Women(FHPW)\, Houston Focus on Concerns for Women (HFCW)\, and the 501(c)(3) FHPW Educational Foundation.
