SUMMARY:Why Fossil Fuels Are Good
DESCRIPTION:Are fossil fuels ruining the planet? Or are oil and natural gas actually helping humans thrive and flourish? To figure out whether fossil fuels are good or bad\, we must carefully look at the benefits\, risks\, and side effects of all the alternatives. Three billion people on this planet do not have affordable\, reliable energy; and wind and solar are simply not available 24/7.\nThe fossil fuel industry increases productivity and prosperity in every area of life\, from agriculture to medicine. Jeanne Perdue will discuss the benefits of fossil fuels and weigh them in the balance with climate concerns about carbon dioxide (CO2)\, concluding that we should be producing more fossil fuels\, not less\, if improving the quality and length of human life is the ultimate goal.\n\nSPEAKER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nJeanne M. Perdue has been a Technical Writer at Occidental Petroleum for the past 8 years. She posts a writing tip of the day on the company’s Yammer website and teaches an Oil Patch Writing class to Oxy colleagues in Houston and the Middle East. \nAfter earning a BS in Chemistry at SUNY at Albany\, she worked in the Texaco research labs for 14 years before becoming an oilfield journalist for Hart’s E&P and Upstream Technology magazines. \nA Distinguished Member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers\, Jeanne served as 2014-15 Chair of the SPE Gulf Coast Section. After being elected to the Alief ISD school board and serving 10 years as President of the Alief Education Foundation\, she now serves on the Houston Community College Foundation Board and the Univ. of Houston Petroleum Engineering Advisory Board.\n\n\n\n
