DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM \nIt’s such a common procedure today that one may never think about how our predecessors handled this vision problem in the past. Cataracts! After recently having both eyes surgically corrected for cataracts\, our speaker describes how easy the procedure was. \nBut what was this surgery like for our forerunners? You’ll discover the earliest recorded history of cataract surgery and the differing results that occurred in these early times. Today\, cataract surgery is such an easy process that most people take it for granted. \nCataract surgery has a long history in Europe\, Asia\, and Africa. It’s now one of the most common and successful surgical procedures in the world. This is thanks to improvements in the technique in removal of the cataract. Keep your eyes open and follow the trail on this visual journey. \n  \nSPEAKER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nIn 2010\, after almost 35 years as a dental hygienist\, Linda Percell left private practice to become a full-time educator. As a Clinical Director\, she was instrumental in forming that portion of the Dental Hygiene Program at Houston Community College (HCC)\, Coleman Campus\, which included both didactic and clinical studies. While teaching full-time at HCC\, she also challenged herself to complete her master’s degree in health sciences concentrating on Education. After achieving this accomplishment in 2012\, she decided to take a less stressful role and joined the Department of Dental Hygiene at Lone Star College in Kingwood as adjunct faculty until retirement. \nAfter retiring in 2016\, she now devotes time to her art which focuses on nature. She works with two disparate mediums: graphite and clay. Her studies with clay feature animals and the colors of nature. Her favored use of clay is in hand building and sculpting a myriad of animals in traditional form.\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM \nYears ago\, our speaker heard someone say that no more than three emotions were allowed in her family. Her parents acknowledged only happy\, sad\, and angry. In this family\, anger was not tolerated and sadness was ignored. So\, for her life\, she decided she might as well be happy. \nWe know that happy\, sad\, and angry don’t begin to label all the feelings out there. This program will explore the variety of emotions that we feel on a regular basis. You will learn where in our bodies we store some of those feelings. Also insights into how we can explore our feelings will be revealed. \nSPEAKER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nHelping others has been Rosemary Behrens’ mantra for as long as she can remember. In working with counseling issues\, she enjoys helping others to learn coping skills\, move past relationship issues\, and see their full potential. She received her Master of Arts in Counseling in 2008 and her license as a professional counselor from the state of Texas in 2011. In 2018\, she received her doctoral degree (PhD) in Counselor Education. She is currently a part-time professor at Kairos University. Rosemary enjoys working with individuals\, couples\, children\, and adolescents. She utilizes Existential theories\, Cognitive-Behavioral\, Mindfulness\, Internal Family Systems\, Narrative\, and she believes in addressing the whole person encompassing body\, mind\, and spirit. As a licensed professional counselor-supervisor\, Rosemary also assists counseling associates\, student interns\, and practicum students in accomplishing their goal of becoming counselors.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:The College Community Career's Success with Students
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM \nHow the College Community Career Builds Four-Year Success  \nThe College Community Career (CCC) fosters a college-going culture in low-income\, first-generation high school students and their families. Its goal is to create and build equity in education. CCC not only prepares students for admission to college\, it guides students toward graduation from a four-year university. The heart of the program is based on four pillars: College Success\, Leadership Development\, Civic Engagement\, and Career Discovery. Working with students\, CCC helps develop a diverse workforce by breaking down traditional barriers that keep students from achieving a college education. CCC strives to help all students reach their potential. When CCC opened in August 2012\, one high school had only 22 sophomores in an afterschool program who had the dream of going to college. Today CCC has expanded to serve more than 400 students a year in 12 Houston area high schools. \n  \n\n\nSPEAKER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nKathy Rose is the Executive Director of College Community Career. She has a Bachelor of Science in math and Spanish education from Texas A&M University\, a master’s degree in business administration from the University of St. Thomas\, and a post-baccalaureate certificate in college counseling from UCLA Extension. Kathy began her career as a mathematics teacher at Spring Branch High School and went on to become a computer programmer and later a trainer with Chevron. Next\, she served as a development officer with the University of Houston Sugar Land\, she then became a major gifts officer with UH. Kathy was the founding Houston director of College Forward and successfully launched that program in four high schools in east Harris County. \nKathy founded College Community Career in 2012 to focus on low-income\, first-generation students on the west side Houston. She envisioned the organization expanding to reach the burgeoning underserved populations in public high schools. She is a former board member of the Fort Bend Education Foundation\, board of trustees member for the International School of Aberdeen (Scotland)\, and board of directors member of the American International School in Lagos\, Nigeria\, and St. Agnes Academy in Houston. Kathy is a proud recipient of a Jefferson Award.

She is passionate about matching people with other people\, organizations\, and resources. She is a past president of the Federation of Houston Professional Women\, Houston Focus on Concerns for Women\, and the FHPW Educational Foundation. She served 20 years on the UH Friends of Women’s Studies board. Leigh is honored to be a member of the UH Libraries Dean’s Cabinet and is a zealous supporter the UH Rare Books Collections. \nLeigh is a member of the Houston Book Arts Guild\, Houston Calligraphy Guild\, and the Houston Visual Journalers. She is a lifetime member of Women in the Visual and Literary Arts and chaired their advisory board. She loves collage\, journals daily\, and writes personal essays and haiku. \nShe is a member of the Lady Washington chapter\, the largest DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) chapter in the world. Her genealogy studies revealed that her great\, great\, great uncle William E. Summers fought and died at the Alamo. \nA graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University\, her first real job was in book publishing and it became her lifelong career. Leigh has three decades of book publishing and marketing experience. She began by designing books and handling their production and printing for Gulf Publishing Company then focused on marketing books and educational training for Vickie Milazzo Institute. \nLeigh and Tim\, both native Texans\, live in a brick bungalow in the Houston Heights. Avid birders\, they love traveling Texas back roads. Their marriage has been celebrated together at the Menger Hotel in San Antonio for 42 years in an unbroken line. \nLeigh is often told\, “You know things!”\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM \nIn this hands-on program you will explore the fascinating state of today’s rug market. The world of hand-woven rugs has undergone a remarkable transformation. The classic red and blue Persian rug is now joined by an incredible array of contemporary styles. From Nepal and other weaving centers\, innovative rug styles have arisen from the influence of diverse cultures. You will learn about the impacts of dramatic shifts in technology\, production techniques\, design\, economics\, and politics. The importance of the changing role of women in the rug industry will be revealed. At the beautiful Pride of Persia Rug Company and Postmodern Traditions Showroom\, you are invited to see and handle a wide range of rugs. Whether you are a world traveler\, a designer\, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty and intrigue of rugs\, you will experience an inside look at today’s exotic expanse of hand-woven rugs. Attendees will enjoy a catered Persian lunch and easy street level parking. \nThis field trip meeting is only open to current members and their invited guests. \nSPEAKER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nMehdi Abedi moved to Houston in 1981 to complete his Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology at Rice University. He also returned to his rug roots. Mehdi says\, “One of the first sounds I ever heard was the sound of weaving.” All four of his sisters were accomplished weavers in Yazd\, Iran. His daily route to school took him past the boiling dye pots and brightly colored wool hung to dry in the alleys. \nBeginning with just 10 small Hamadans in 1981\, he built an extensive rug collection and a loyal clientele. \nA few years later\, he began teaching other enthusiasts about Persian rugs through continuing education courses. \nLisa Slappey joined Mehdi as a partner in selling Persian rugs by private appointment. They acquired exhibit space in Carolyn Thompson’s Antique Center of Texas in 1996 and Pride of Persia Rug Company was born. They later expanded to feature about 4\,000 rugs in an 8\,000 sq ft showroom. In 2009\, Pride of Persia grew again by opening a beautiful new showroom in the Houston Design Center. \nTo meet the growing demand for Tibetan-style rugs\, Abedi and Slappey opened Postmodern Traditions Custom & Contemporary Rug Gallery in 2011. \nNext came their current home: a 9\,500 sq ft showroom in the Westport complex facing Old Katy Rd. This showroom features an extensive collection of antique and unusual Persian rugs from the cities\, tribes\, and villages of Iran along with select lines of hand-woven custom\, contemporary\, and decorative rugs from around the world. \nIncluded in this field trip meeting event is a wonderful complimentary Persian luncheon prepared by our speaker and amazing chef: Mehdi.\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n

You’ll learn how to identify your subject\, consider technical and artistic issues\, and take photographs that will make you proud. June will critique for you the images she will share as examples. \nRecognize the elements of great photos: color\, line\, texture\, contrast\, selective focus\, and shadow…that ooh\, ahh factor. Whether using your smartphone camera or a digital SLR\, you’ll gain techniques on how to frame your image\, use natural materials\, and capture perspective shots that keep your eyes going. Plus terrific tips such as carrying a black cloth so you can see your phone screen. \nSPEAKER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJune Russell has been a fine art photographer for more than 25 years and has had five solo exhibitions. She also exhibits in numerous group shows. June has delivered presentations to art groups in Texas and Colorado and her work is included in collections across the country. The majority of her work is inspired by nature and she often focuses on making abstract images from extremely close-up photography. June is also creating a totally different body of work titled “Visible Frequencies\,” which is based on light patterns. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Randolph Macon Woman’s College\, now Randolph College in Lynchburg\, Virginia. Her business career was in human resources working in retail and manufacturing with her last position as director of human resources for Lamons Gasket Company. Currently in semi-retirement she has a human resources consulting firm and spends her free time conducting research in Spanish documents\, writing\, and volunteering. She holds both GPHR and SHRM-SPC certifications. \nA thirty-year member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR)\, she is currently Regent of Houston’s Lady Washington Chapter and serves as National Vice-Chair lineage research – Spanish Task Force. She is also the Texas State Chair for the Spanish Task Force—a Vice-Chair of the State Lineage Research team. In these roles\, she educates DAR membership and the public about Spain’s support during the American Revolution and how to join DAR on a Spanish Patriot. Her book The Papers of Joaquin Ortega is the go-to resource for all Joaquin Ortega descendants wanting to join DAR. She has published articles in numerous in journals and genealogical publications. She Privately published Our Boys in Khaki WWI letters of Private Fred Richman 1918–1919. \nAnthony is a member of the Order of Granaderos y Damas de Gálvez working to promote the history of Spain’s role in the American Revolution. As a board member of this organization\, she serves as National Secretary and Deputy Governor of the Houston chapter. \nAnthony is a member of the Hispanic Genealogical Society of Houston\, Daughters of the American Colonists\, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War\, Continental Society Daughters of Indian Wars\, and National Society United Daughters of 1812. \nAnthony has two children who descend from eleven Galvez soldiers or civil servants. Her daughter Marion\, is a member of the Kinninick Chapter in Colorado Springs. Her son William\, a member of the Alexander Hodge SAR Chapter\, and wife Elizabeth\, a Chicago Chapter DAR member\, live in Chicago.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Challenges and Successes of a Woman in Law Enforcement
DESCRIPTION:Find out the inside workings of the Harris County’s Precinct One Constable’s Office and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office through the eyes of a female law enforcement officer. You’ll learn about the workings of our county\, the largest county by population in Texas. From its K-9 operations to the Harris County Toll Road\, Captain Hennessy shares what it’s like to be a woman in law enforcement. \n  \n\nSPEAKER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCaptain Nancy Hennessy joined the Precinct One Constable’s Office in 2013 after serving over 28 years with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office attaining the rank of Captain assigned to various divisions including Patrol\, Patrol Support\, and Communications. Currently\, her primary duties at Precinct One involve the planning\, assignment and supervision of the activities of patrol personnel who are assigned to community contracts and district patrol duties. Captain Hennessy is responsible for coordinating special initiatives and operations throughout the precinct as needed to address high crime areas using the Tactical Patrol Unit. Captain Hennessy oversees K-9 Operations. She also maintains oversight of the Animal Cruelty Unit\, which works closely with the Houston SPCA and their investigators responsible for responding to and investigating animal abuse/neglect cases in Harris and surrounding counties. She manages the Precinct One Toll Road Operations working with the Harris County Toll Road Authority. Captain Hennessy is responsible for the overall direction\, coordination and evaluation of the personnel under these divisions. Her additional responsibilities also include interviewing and recommending candidates for hire. Captain Hennessy works closely with the Division Chief in day-to-day operations.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:First Ladies of the United States of America and Their Cookies: Abigail Quincy Smith Adams
DESCRIPTION:As we continue our review of the First Ladies of the United States and Their Cookies\, we will study the life of Abigail Adams. You will be introduced to the wife of our second President\, John Adams. \nMeet Abigail Adams\, an emotionally strong and intelligent woman who was the first to move into a partially finished President’s House\, now known as the White House. She was devoted to John and wrote letters to him daily. She was keenly interested in politics and included her views in these letters as well as personal messages. \nPreviously\, we have had a glimpse into the lives of Martha Washington\, Mary Lincoln\, and Elizabeth “Bess” Truman\, plus more in depth studies of Eleanor Roosevelt\, Claudia “Lady Bird” Johnson\, Jacqueline Kennedy\, Rosalyn Carter\, and Dolley Madison. \nOur program will conclude with a tasting of Abigail’s Brandy Snaps. \n  \n\nSPEAKER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarolyn Tucker Myers is originally from Memphis\, Tennessee. Her family moved to a suburb of Detroit\, Michigan where her father worked with General Motors. After five years of snow and ice\, he moved the family south. Texas was chosen because of an uncle in Dallas and friends in Houston. In 1951\, her parents opened a hardware store in Pasadena\, where they both worked. \nCarolyn graduated from Pasadena High School in 1955 and the University of Texas\, Austin\, in 1959\, and married shortly thereafter. The newlyweds were stationed in Morocco where her husband spent two years in the Air Force. They returned to Coleman in central West Texas where she taught elementary school for six years.\nIn 1977\, she moved back to Pasadena with her only child\, a son\, and joined the family business. After the death of her parents and 60 years later\, Tucker Hardware was closed in 2011 and thus\, closed a chapter in the family’s history. \nA previous member and international secretary of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority\, Carolyn also served as president of Soroptimist International of Pasadena\, a service organization. Soropitmist International honored her as Woman of Excellence at the 2000 Federation of Houston Professional Women Gala. \nShe became interested in presidential libraries when she attended the annual hardware market in Atlanta\, Georgia with her mother. They toured the library of President James E. “Jimmy” Carter. Thus began her mother’s collection of presidential plates\, which Carolyn now proudly possesses. The other presidential libraries she has visited include: John F. Kennedy\, Lyndon B. Johnson\, George H.W. Busy\, and George W. Bush and found each different and intriguing.\n\n\n\n
